Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic approach that utilises hypnosis to induce a deeply relaxed state. It enables the conscious and subconscious minds to come together in focus, allowing access to the vast intellectual resource within the main cortex of the brain.
In this heightened state of awareness, you become more receptive to positive suggestions as the conscious critical faculty, that can often scrutinise and filter them out, becomes less active. This makes it possible to address various issues such as anxiety, stress, phobias and unwanted habits or behaviours.
Unlike the misconceptions that have arisen through the media and as a result of stage hypnosis, hypnotherapy is a collaborative process where you remain in control, fully aware and actively engaged. It is a clinically recognised approach that has been shown to help reframe negative thought patterns and promote lasting change.
Solution-Focused Hypnotherapy is a modern, evidence-based approach that combines the principles of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) with hypnosis. This method identifies your strengths and resources, focusing on solutions rather than problems so you are encouraged to imagine your future state where the problem no longer exists. The questioning style allows you to explore solutions and set small goals rather than dwelling on past trauma and the hypnosis element enables you to process and develop those solutions.
A typical session begins with a discussion on positive outcomes for the week. The purpose of this is to track and acknowledge progress, encourage you to start focusing on the positive things in your life and get you operating from your left pre-frontal cortex so you are better equipped to explore solutions.
We then work together on outlining your desired outcomes and setting small, manageable goals that move you towards your desired future. An important element of each session is also to explain how the approach is working from a neuroscientific perspective as this helps highlight the value of the goals you are achieving and drives motivation and commitment.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy focuses almost entirely on the present and future. It helps you envision how you want your life to be and builds small, achievable steps toward that outcome.Traditional hypnotherapy often explores the past, including root causes, childhood events or traumas that may contribute to current issues. It may also focus mainly on hypnotic intervention and less on talk therapy.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy often uses hypnosis as a reinforcing tool, a way to consolidate the progress made during the conversation and to help embed positive suggestions and visualisations whereas traditional hypnotherapy may rely more heavily on direct suggestion hypnosis, where the therapist suggests specific changes while the client is in trance.
When practiced by a trained professional, hypnotherapy is safe. It is non-invasive with very few risks. You are always in control and cannot be made to do anything against your will and you can choose to come out of the hypnotic state at any time. Hypnotherapy may not, however, be suitable for individuals with certain conditions, including psychosis, schizophrenia, severe personality disorders or epilepsy.
In these cases, hypnotherapy could potentially exacerbate symptoms or lead to adverse reactions. It is crucial for individuals with any of these conditions to consult with their healthcare provider before undergoing hypnotherapy.
